탄화규소는 강한공유결합에 기인하여 소결하기 어려운 재료이다. 탄화규소의 상압소결은 미 국 G.E.의 Prochazka1 에 의해 B 와 C 를 소결촉진제로 사용함으로서 처음으로 성공하게 되었고, 그 후에 B 화합물, Al 화합물, Be 화합물 등 여러가지 소결조제가 개발되었다. 탄화규소는 고 온강도가 높고, 내마모성, 내산화성, 내식성, 크립저항성 등의 특성이 우수하여 고온 구조재료로서 주목을 받아왔다. 그렇지만 탄화규소의 고상소결은 2000oC 이상의 고온을 필요로하고, 얻어진 소 결체의 기계적 특성이 그리좋지 않아서 (곡강도 350-500 MPa, 파괴인성 2.5-4 MPa.m1/.2), 탄화 규소의 고온구조재료로의 응용을 제한하였다.
탄화규소의 액상소결은 Omori2 에 의해 처음 개발되어졌고, 액상소결에 의해 제조된 탄화규 소의 기계적 특성이 고상소결에 의해 제조된 탄화규소의 기계적특성보다 우수하여 탄화규소의 액 상소결에 대한 관심은 계속 증가되어왔다.3-6 특히 1994년에 이중미세구조를 갖는 질화규소 (Si3N4)와 유사한 in situ-toughened 탄화규소 (현장인화 탄화규소, 자기복합 탄화규소)가 미국 NIST의 Padture에 의해 보고되어 졌고, 그 이래로 SiC의 단점인 낮은 파괴인성을 극복할수 있 다는 가능성이 여러 연구자들에 의해 보고되어 현재 활발한 연구가 진행되고 있는 분야이다.7-15

미국은 구조세라믹스 및 가스터빈 엔진 산업의 주도국으로서 산업체는 물론 정부차원에서 에너지성, 국방성 등의 주관으로 세라믹 소재의 개발 및 그 응용분야로서 세라믹 가스터빈의 개 발에 적극 참여하고 있다. 미국에서 국가 주도로 추진되었거나, 추진되고 있는 구조세라믹스 관 련 연구개발 프로그램은 아래와 같다.일본

대한중석 과 쌍용양회에서 내마모부품(메카니컬씰, 샌드노즐, 펌프부품), 내열부품(열전대 튜브), 내화학부품(화학펌프용 씰, 밸브부품) 등을 생산하고 있다.
서울시립대에서 KIST와 공동으로 개발중인 자기복합 탄화규소의 대표적인 미세구조는 Fig. 1에서 보여준다.
